Working With Library Collections? Here's An Anthology Of Clever Dusting Tips
Somerville, NJ (February 2002) - Librarian Rebecca Chamaa of Burbank, Ca., has long used a commercial gas duster to keep computers dust-free.
Her other innovative uses, though, not only have saved staff time and protected equipment, but also won her a portable CD player in a new-uses contest sponsored by the manufacturers of Dust-Off® compressed-gas dusters. Among her suggestions: Use Dust-Off not only on electronic scanners and photocopiers, but also on engraved wall plaques and hard-to-reach shelf corners.
"The best use though is for our slides," she reports. "Slides are very fragile and you can't touch the faces. Dust-Off is the perfect tool for cleaning them, before returning them to their cases."
A commercial compressed-gas duster, Dust-Off was invented in the 1970s so news photographers could safely clean negatives and camera equipment. The product now is mostly found in office-supply outlets, for use in cleaning computer equipment.
The Grand Prize winner, announced last month, won a home electronics package worth $3,000 for his suggested use: cleaning automobile air vents.
