Falcon Safety Products Commends California’s Efforts to Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Consumer Products



FALCON SAFETY PRODUCTS COMMENDS CALIFORNIA’S EFFORTS TO LIMIT GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Branchburg, NJ (October 14, 2008) – In June 2008, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, unanimously voted to adopt measures to limit emissions from consumer products in the state of California. Falcon Safety Products, Inc., a world leading aerosol manufacturer, applauds CARB’s efforts in bringing much needed attention to the growing issue of climate change and introducing California’s first greenhouse gas regulation to affect consumer products.

As the leading manufacturer of compressed-gas dusters, Falcon Safety Products has been aggressively promoting the use of HFC152a as the primary choice propellant for dusters for the last 15 years. HFC152a is currently utilized in over 90 percent of Falcon Safety Products’ Dust-Off® compressed-gas dusters. Falcon Safety Products’ leadership in this area has resulted in widespread industry adoption of HFC152a as the chief propellant in compressed-gas duster products.

“Falcon commends CARB for turning its attention to greenhouse gas emissions from consumer products,” said Phillip Lapin, President and CEO of Falcon Safety Products. “The state of California should be commended as well, as it’s currently the only state with a comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions statewide.”

Although most of the measures set in place by the CARB put limits on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from a variety of consumer products, including aerosols and non aerosols, one element of the regulation specifically limits the use of propellants in compressed-gas dusters to those with a global warming potential (GWP) below 150. HFC134a, the gas widely used in compressed-gas dusters, features a GWP of 1,300, meaning the gas has 1,300 times the global warming potential than one gram of CO2. As the only viable gas currently available for use as propellant with a GWP below 150 (HFC152a has a GWP of 140), CARB’s regulations effectively endorse the use of HFC152a, the primary compound used in Falcon Safety Products’ Dust-Off® compressed-gas dusters, as the preferred gas for duster products.

The above GWP values are taken from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Second Assessment Report: Climate Change 1995; however, the agency’s more current Fourth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2007 cites HFC134a as having a GWP of 1,410 and HFC152a as having a GWP value of 122. The new GWP values indicated by the IPCC are likely to soon be adopted worldwide and further underscore the environmental benefits of using HFC152a over HFC134a.

The CARB’s regulation also provides exemptions for the use of HFC134a. Although HFC134a does feature a higher GWP, Falcon Safety Products utilizes the gas for its special application compressed-gas dusters as well as safety horns, due to its non flammability. Special application compressed-gas dusters are used throughout laboratories, where open flame is a concern, as well as in applications dealing with circuitry where sparks and heat are an issue. Flammability is a paramount concern regarding safety horns because of potential use during emergency situations, especially when used during a fire onboard a vessel.

Falcon Safety Products has a long standing history of working proactively to benefit the environment. In 1989, when destruction of the ozone layer was the main environmental focus, Falcon Safety Products switched, before it was required, from CFC12, an ozone depleting gas, to HCFC22, which is 95% ozone safe. Again, in 1993, Falcon Safety Products switched its formulation from HCFC22 to HFC152a and HFC134a, both of which are 100% ozone safe. As a company, Falcon Safety Products, along with its supply chain partners, is committed to researching new alternatives to HFCs with very low GWPs and will switch to these formulations as soon as the compounds become commercially viable for use in compressed-gas dusters.

In addition to formulation switches, Falcon Safety Products’ President and CEO, Philip Lapin, was a contributing author to the IPCC report “Safeguarding the Ozone Layer and the Global Climate System.” This environmental report is used as the benchmark for global climate change science today, and subsequently won the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore in 2007. Lapin’s involvement and leadership is another example of Falcon Safety Products’ long-standing commitment to the environment.
